Mysterious Prezzies

appearing now on the dining room table. Somebody gets his birthday prezzies (that word is a quote: can anyone identify which heroine of mine it is attributable to? Here's a hint: HGB) a week early... owing to the fact we'll be whitewater rafting next weekend with the boys, and it's no good to bring such a suite of pink and blue frill along. He is a la cuisine cooking our fried noodle dinner right now and hasn't been to the table yet.

Meanwhile, I discovered i can spin around really fast and photograph myself with my notebook! Whew, me dizzy.

In related news, these may be the last crappy ass photos i take with my Macbook Pro. Heh.

Happy Birthday Mister!

We had a GREAT time this weekend with a bunch of new friends on the New River in West Virginia. After rafting all day, Steven got to play volleyball until dark too! He's limping a bit now, and my ankles and knees are a bit crispy... and we are happy to be back in air conditioning and on a springed allergen magnet after 3 days of camping, heat and humidity. Thanks RONALD for inviting us to go, and for being such a great friend!

In other news, i think my scanner is on the way out. Witnesseth:

Szechuan Fire Chilli

Somebody's going to win that trophy again for a second year in a row...

Just Another Wednesday...

but a few things to report. First, as this is JingXia's last week here, she is apparently feeling compelled to cook enough to last us through the winter. Here is a little Chinese Sandwich *sweet rice cake* i'm eating for a light supper. She's made 3,747 more of these and putting them in the freezer. For us. Because, you know, we both hate to cook and all. We're thinking of buying a factory for her next year.

In other news, my manscaping project is coming along, dunno how nicely though. I've decided for this winter, i will keep my head SHAVED, while letting my beard grow into a big Grizzly Adams Bear Affair. Just for a change of pace. It is itchy.

Steven gets to go to Taliesin West on Friday, after he wraps up his week in Phoenix. I hope he takes lots of very, very detailed pictures.

I am deep into watery eyes, drippy throat, coughing, mouth-breathing right now. Taking nyquil for night #2 now. I hope it ends tomorrow; keep your fingers crossed for me!

What else? OH! We had 4" of snow today! Happy happy, joy joy.

Sleeping in the Sun

Somebody had to work ALL NIGHT LONG--until well after sunup--and will now sleep the day away. Some Friday nights Steven has code that goes live, and he has to be around to talk on the phone with people trying to make the systems go, while he clicks around all night. What a paiiiin.

On the plus side, makes Gormie Girl very happy to have a sleeping companion.

A Month of Octobers

A Day of Birth
A Wunderbar Dinner of Danish Meatballs
A Sea of Leaves
A New Kitchen Aid mixer
A New Nigella Lawson breadbox
Our tomatoes are still prolific
And my new kitchen.
And, a man who will cook recipes from Elle Decor.
Wow
How lucky can one man be?
Shall I cast my fate to the wind?
Thanks Mister.

Another Wilde Beaste

wants breakfast. She's been dozing all over the Mister while we watch Real Time with Bill Maher. She loves to park it right on top of either of our chests, and ride the gentle wave while we breathe. "Bush read 87 books last year" inspires a little surge of laughter, making the gentle wave into a big squall. She digs in, hanging on, glares into his eyes. *Lick lick lick* Regains composure.

Steven v. the Wilde Beastes

Steven: 1
Wilde Beastes: 0

He really should pick on someone his own size. My cave man slaughtered a squirrel today. He's been chowing down on Sunflower fruit JingXia has been trying to dry out--for weeks now--and generally creating all manner of mayhem in the garden. Lately, he'd taken to chewing through the screen to get on our screened porch, where Ma had safeguarded the Sunflower pods from the little bastard. Just this morning, Steven observed him molesting Mike and Jane's new bird feeder next door, and found that he'd attacked the Aloe plant again. Well, later Steven heard a crash, went to check, and le terrorsite had knocked a vase over and smashed it while practically foraging in our fridge (only a few more feet away). Now, Steven has known that the time for diplomacy and negotiation has passed. Carrots failing, it was now time for a stick. Taking advantage of the fact that the terrorist was at a dead end, trapped in a relatively confined space (our screened porch, not Tora Bora), Steven grabbed a handy stick (leftover 80 year old lath pieces in the corner from our recent plaster demolition careers), and proceeded to beat the living shit of the squirrel. He's in a Heavy-Duty Contractor Black bag now, awaiting his Thursday trip to final destination at the Athens-Hocking landfill. Let's hope the Reign of Terror is over (regardless of what Petraeus has to say about it).

Steven's Response to Top Design

Steven and i both got into Bravo's reality show Top Design alot in the beginning. It is about a bunch of young, up and rising designers--some really earnest, some wannabes, some avec axe to grind, some just clueless in startling ways--who are made to compete in coming up with solutions to a common design challenge for some imaginary fat cat with greedy, consumptive needs. A new poolside cabanna for X, a loft pied a terre for Y. Living quarters for an artist or disco/cocktail party event tent on the beach for Bacardi Lemon (these are the real scenarios, i couldn't make it up).

We really liked Project Runway too, the earlier, fashion-oriented version of this show...and thankfully don't get addicted to much Television. And with the beauty of our DVR, we watch in concentrated bursts when we want to. Ultimately, Runway is a much better show. I think i feel that way because the critics were just better, and recognized genuine creativity.

Thanks to our friend Larisa, who introduced us to Jonathan Adler years ago, we had grown to love the wacky yet haute chic sense of Adler, the Top Design star critic. As the show wore on, however--and judge Kelli's sense of personal style went from slighly Cyndi Lauper circa '86 to Baroque to Mannerist to Bizarre--we both started to hate it. But couldn't--of course--stop watching. Good, groundbreaking design ideas were usually punished by the panel of "expert" judges, while those who proved able to finesse the tired and old (or tried and true if you prefer) were rewarded.

I am taken back to the springtime of this show because this week our new issue of Elle Decor arrived with the winning "top design" published. A mostly colorless, bland attempt at sophistication within a rough loft space. More like sophistry, if you ask me. Seeing the winning design months later, it looked even more pale, timid, and unworthy of Jonathan's seal of approval. He makes such beautiful--and startlingly retro kitsch, yet very chic--stuff that i think will stand the test of time. I mean LOOK at the sheer exuberance of Adler's stuff!

After one particularly maddening episode, I remember Steven firing off a response on the show's blog on Bravo's website. And i just came across it now, cleaning up my links, to my utter joy. I share now, herewith:

My god, Mike was finally gone. He just does not have the instinct. Sometimes that instinct is not learnable and he does not like to listen either.
Janathan, you are my favorite. We love your ceramic works and have a few of them. I was so looking forward to the show. I have to say I think that the show is a bit lame. Also when originality or creativity is not rewarded, mediocrity will prevail.
My favorite is Goil. He has great sense of space and very creative. However, I hope that he presents a bit more of versatility. I was disappointed that he commented about conflict between Arts & Crafts and Modern. He had architecture background and graduated from one of top architecture school. Modern movement just followed Arts & Crafts. Asian architecture, culture and philosophy had great influence for those movements. That could be a great connection to create a beautiful chic, rustic space. I do like his creation. By the way, this day people are so confused between modern and contempory. For me, modern is authentic and contempory is fake and just crap. Except Goil's room, none of others are even close to be modern or Arts and Crafts. And the guest judge picked Andrea's. I hope that Tom Colicchio should tell what he really meant is like contempory style. If you are not expert on something, do not pretend to be.
We have Elle Decor and enjoy it very much. I have high regard for Margaret Russell before I watched the show. She did not impress me much. Her comments just does not reflect the capacity of the editor-in-chief of that beautiful magzine. She just does not have a clear vision what it takes to create a great space with personal surrounding.

Ah, memories. I'm so glad you are writing now mister!

You can read his response in it's native place here, and peruse all the other viewer comments to the particular episode too. Good stuff.

Now, the tedious work of painting in the leaves, and highlighting them. Meanwhile, Meet the Press blares in the background.

He's So Martha...

Me, I can't bring myself to do anything much today. Not even a good thing. I polished silver and washed the new china, put it all away in the new china cabinet. And cooked.

But Steven has been very industrious.

second coat going on

the finished product: blue reed bundles, red maple leaves, brown lowlights at the reeds, chartreuse highlights at the leaves. a definite good thing.

So Far Away...

We went to Europe in August with Dawn and Preston and Cole...and it seems like it was so long ago and far away. And Ohio seems so far away. Even though we don't see those guys that often, i'll miss them a bunch. Y'all come visit Ohio soon! Posted by Picasa

What a back-to-nature STUD!

Ok, so since this is the man who makes me think, write, hike--and just live in general--better and better everyday, I thought it is probably time I write my first post about you, Steven. He's super smart (has FOUR degrees), has great instincts (the only partner i've ever had who didn't require sitting down to go over a few things, such as basic tenets of nesting and arranging stuff in pleasing ways. Feng shui comes naturally to him), can make plans for the future WHILE living in the present (i'd not be saving any $$ if it weren't for this man), loves plants and pets (the dog and the cat like him better), and cooks effortlessly (and simply and with an accent on health). What can I say? He is just about the closest thing to perfection that I've been lucky enough to find. And just look at that face! Love you, Mister. Posted by Picasa
