Atlanta, Atlanta, That's My Hometown!

Click HERE to hear a silly little jingle about my hometown, Atlanta, made by WPLO...in the fifties or early sixties i guess. Still sneezing my brains out here. *sigh*

Mom, what did WPLO stand for? Anything? I mean, i remember WSB was supposed to stand for Welcome, Southern Brother... did WPLO mean anything in that parlance?

Hello People! Let's Go Shopping!

Brini Maxwell's sweet publicist Jennifer sent me an email thanking me for putting up a link to one of Brini's shows! Well, and also to make a plug for BRINI'S PRODUCTS FOR SALE!

Who can't imagine Brini playing Kim Novak? And who can't use some of those darling felt wool coasters? How about a see-thru vinyl apron festooned with an adorable tulip pocket? I already have Brini's sensible, chic, and useful Guide to Gracious Living. And i love Love LOVE the It's For YOU! pillows! Now if i could just find someone to get that rotary phone ringtone on my mobile...

Thank you Jennifer, for cheering me up with more Brini cheer. You are gracious indeed.

Hello People!

I've been watching Brini Maxwell for a while on youtube to cheer myself up:

Why oh why did the Style Channel have to cancel Brini?? I think this was the greatest show EVER. Well, since AbFab anyway. Sniff.

Gee, I Love the Internet.

I went to graduate school at Georgia Tech with the red head in the above video... I haven't seen him since i bumped into him at a gay bar named the Heretic in Atlanta, more than 10 years ago. Apparently he is doing a gig in NOLA as a videographer/design critic/culture snob! I miss Brad, wish we hadn't fallen out of touch.

The Athena Cinema is Back!

Thank goodness our own ATHENA CINEMA is back! It was on hiatus all summer, which put a definite dent in my popcorn consumption. The good news is that the College of Fine Arts at Ohio University is now in charge, and they not only show the best of the new, but it's going to have a art house dimension also. YAY! For instance, today at 6pm featured the Athens Premiere of Godard's CONTEMPT starring Brigitte Bardot and Jack Palance. And i missed it! Doh.

Praying This Will Come to our Little Town!

And the OFFICIAL WEBSITE

Let us all fall down and thank brother bill for tackling this subject.

“Since starting on Politically Incorrect in 1993, it has been my pleasure over the last decade and a half to make organized religion one of my favorite targets. I often explained to people, ‘I don’t need to make fun of religion, it makes fun of itself.’ And, then I go ahead and make fun of it too, just for laughs.

With religious fanatics like George Bush and Osama bin Laden now taking over the world, it seemed to me in recent years that this issue—this cause of debunking the man behind the curtain—needed to have a larger, more insistent and focused forum than late night television. I wanted to make a documentary, and I wanted it to be funny. In fact, since there is nothing more ridiculous than the ancient mythological stories that live on as today’s religions, this movie would try to be a real knee slapper. Unless, of course, you’re religious, then you might not like it.

Who could I get to direct me on such an epic event? In reality, there was only one man, and his name is Larry Charles. I hope that together we fulfilled that quest. Which really isn’t that hard, considering that comedically speaking, the topic of religion is pretty much hitting the side of a barn.

As a comedian, religion has always interested me—it was the single easiest subject to make jokes about. I think that tells us something: comedians look for things that don’t make sense, that are illogical.

Even as a young comedian, routines I did that got the biggest laughs and got me invited back on the Tonight Show were the religious ones—like the one about being half Catholic and half Jewish and bringing a lawyer into confession: ‘Bless me father for I have sinned—and I think you know Mr. Cohen…’

Politics is a rich area, but even politicians, although they promise some ridiculous stuff, don’t approach the level of, for example, the Mormon practice of promising couples a planet to rule over in the after life if they have a really good marriage on earth. They give you a planet—kinda like when someone gives you a certificate that says a star has been named after you—except here, they really give you the star!

Join me in this final battle between intelligence and stupidity that will decide the future of humanity. Coming soon to a house of false idols near you.”

2008 Beijing Olympic Games

Check out my handy dandy new widget over there on the right to track the medal race. China is WAY ahead in the gold category, as of today. After seeing last Friday's incredible Opening Ceremonies, we've been pretty much watching the games regularly. Steven has been staying up all hours watching too, neither of us are getting enough sleep! Mom i was telling Steven about a memory of you watching the Olympics obsessively too, sometime in our past. Was that the '72 Games?? or one of the Winter Games in between? Wish i could remember.

Newsclipping of the Day :: CCTV in Beijing

Steven just sent me this link to OMA's new CCTV headquarters building in Beijing. We've been marvelling over this one for a while, and, while the main building is not yet complete, the cultural centre / hotel is ready for it's first purpose as CCTV's official outpost of the upcoming Olympic Games. I remember in graduate school, way back in '90, wacky Dutchman Rem Koolhaas and his Office for Metropolitan Architecture's star was just beginning to rise. They were finally exiting the realm of theoreticians and getting real commissions, such as the Millenium Dome in Great Britain. This is really a marvel of a complex, i can't wait to see the finished results. What do you guys think? I think it is a real work of art.

It's a Jungle Out There!

After our few days in Confluence, PA--where we visited two Frank Lloyd Wright chef d'oeuvres, Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob--we went to Pittsburgh for 24 hours or so. We happened to have dinner in the hotel hosting the 2008 ANTRHOCON. Mom, BC, and JingXia could not believe their eyes I think. Steven and i were ready to be outfitted with tails. Not.

Check Steven's blog shortly for pics of the trip.

It's That Time of Year Again!

No, i'm not talking about taxes. It's time for the 34th Annual Athens International Film + Video Festival! Who wants to come and see? I can't believe the huge roster of films, many of them I really really want to see. I'm so glad this tiny little town is happenin enough to have this. Last year it was great. One of this films I saw last year was Almost Normal, which was conceived and written down the block by an Ohio University student, who was here for a talk and reception after the screening, along with several of his crew. Last year, Steven wasn't here yet, this year he gets to go and see lots and lots of these!

Oh my god--look what is playing at our tiny little movie theatre! I know what we're doing tomorrow night. May be cliche overload, but this trailer sure makes it look hilarious. Has anyone seen it?
