Our Mountain House... in Detroit??

Tyree Guyton’s Heidelberg Project? $100 houses? Matthew Barney’s “Ancient Evenings” project? Crazy artists taking over slums abandoned by corporate American waste and greed?

What do all the above words have in common? Detroit, i tell you. Where a house can be had for $100 these days (i'm still skeptical about that). Where the nations artists are flocking to make their way, make a statement, and live cheaply and in a new way.

I just read THIS op-ed piece in the NYT from a couple of weeks ago about it all. Seriously Steven, maybe we should buy a mountain house in a Detroit crack hood? Or, at least go for a visit and see what it's really like. You think there are entire streets covered with stuffed animals like this?

Wow. I can wait for this. Steven's mom is in Shanghai right now.

Habitat '67

After two comments from new (and very interesting) readers of the previous post.. i wanted to delve further into Habitat '67 over lunch. Did you know Habitat '67 was the first in a big scheme that was to deploy in NUMEROUS OTHER CITIES? Very interesting. Moshe Safdie. Ok. Must. Eat.

Utopia

Having been to Montreal twice now, we both really appreciate the groovy Frenchiness of this wonderful city. The food is incroyable, there is alot going on, and the people are beautiful and fabulous. Here is a little piece i found on youtube today about Expo '67... seems to be a, ummm, fully rounded--shall we say--commentary. After our first visit to Montreal years ago, we came back and googled Habitat to find that it is very difficult and competitive to live there, and requires a bit of life's ambition to tackle the requirements of being allowed the priveledge of living there. Utopia indeed.

White Coral Dinnerware

Here is some modern, non-kitsch and non-antique dinnerware i could get into. From a Dutch manufacturer, this particular line is designed by a Pratt Institute grad, and is tres tres tres TRES bon. Wonder how many fabulous thousands of Euros it would set me back? Isn't it beautiful?

Eichler Mod

Here is a really cool collection of Eichler mod California houses, if any of you are into it. These (for the most part) are DREAM houses for me. I'd love to have one, with tons of glass, an open-to-the-sky atrium in the middle, and lots of giant, desertey/tropical plants. If you click on each picture, each takes you to another page with lots more pictures of each dreamy, mod unit. Our old house in Atlanta had this kind of spirit, even though it wasn't nearly as deluxe or exuberant as any of these.

I can do this!

Well, in my dreams anyway. I don't know what sort of missing chromosome type I am to think, when I see artworks like this, to myself "that looks so easy, i'll do that later." Seriously, look at this: it's just watered-down paint, splashed on an otherwise unused BIG canvas, colors allowed to bleed together pleasingly. We'll do this, right Steven, as soon as we have a nice big room up here with a nice big blank wall, right? Right.
